Recorded in Brooklyn, this album was put together by the Austrian drummer Gernot Bernroider. It features his imaginative arrangements of Nina Simone’s book. I didn’t know a lot about Simone’s music and it was cool getting to learn more about about it. The album features Chanda Rule, a powerhouse vocalist who straddles the line between jazz and gospel music, and also features superb playing from Grammy winner Donny McCaslin whose solos always leave me breathless. Alejandro Aviles and Ike Sturm round out the band.
