Deric Dickens is a super swinging drummer who is equally at home whether laying down a groove or playing free. He phoned me and the cornetist Kirk Knuffke to play a session and from the first note we had such a strong musical connection. Deric’s idea was to improvise off of transcriptions from Alan Lomax field recordings. It was a brilliant idea and a great challenge too. We recorded at Maggie’s Farm out in rural Pennsylvania. Watching the deer run around the pond right outside the studio windows provided the perfect setting for what we were doing.
